ADVERTISING OF UAB TEZ TOUR WAS MISLEADING HOLIDAY-MAKERS

24 05 2007

Having examined and assessed the findings of the completed investigation, and heard the explanations of interested parties the Competition Council passed the decision concerning the compliance of the advertising claims announced by UAB Tez Tour with the requirements of Article 5 of the Law on Advertising. It was established that while advertising the trips UAB Tez Tour was offering and promoting the acquisition thereof, in its 2006-2007 Catalogue had provided incorrect information about certain conditions in the hotel Sonesta Club in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. Advertising statements including “… from the hotel to the airport – 10 km; hotel in the centre of Naama Bay; 300 m to the beach ...“.

For the use of these misleading statements UAB Tez Tour was subjected to a fine of LTL 10,000. In accordance with the provisions of the Law on Advertising the company was obligated to cease the use of the misleading advertising, i.e., indicate by separate items in the contracts with the customers who have ordered the stay in Sonesta Club hotel the correct distances to the airport, centre of the city and the beach.

The investigation was carried out in response to the complaint filed by a consumer that claimed that when selecting a place for holiday in Egypt his selection was largely affected by the information presented in the catalogue, however upon arrival the complainant discovered that the distances indicated in the advertising catalogue were significantly shorter than in reality.
